Abstract

A pneumatic tyre having a pair of axially spaced tyre beads (4) at least one of which has a circumferentially extending toe is provided with primary air relief means e.g. grooves (10) extending between the axially inner and outer surfaces of the toe to prevent the toe effecting a seal with the rim when the tyre is fitted to a non-matching wheel rim. The tyre bead (4) having the toe may have secondary air relief means (23) axially outboard of the primary air relief means to prevent the tyre bead (4) effecting a seal with a bead retaining flange when the tyre is fitted to a non-matching wheel rim. When fitted to a non-matching wheel rim and inflated, the tyre deflates by air leaking through the primary air relief means and, where provided, the secondary air relief means (23). When the tyre is fitted to a matching wheel rim and inflated the toe is received in a groove (Fig. 3 not shown) in the wheel rim so that the primary air relief means is closed preventing loss of air. The primary air relief means may alternatively comprise criss-crossing grooves (Fig. 6 not shown) or holes extending through the toe. <IMAGE>
