Abstract
An apparatus 200 for storing energy comprising a first stage having a compressor/expander 130a and a first heat store 120a for receiving and storing thermal energy from gas compressed/expanded by the compressor/expander, a second stage having a compressor/expander 140a for receiving gas from the first heat store and a second heat store 110a for transferring thermal energy to gas compressed/expanded by the expander. The apparatus further comprises a means 230 of maintaining gas pressure within a pressure range in at least part of the apparatus. The apparatus may operate in a charging or discharging mode. The heat stores may contain particulate gas permeable heat storage material 111a, 121al. The pressure maintaining means may maintain a constant pressure and may be a buffer (figs 2 7 & 10 - 12) for adding gas to or receiving gas from at least part of the apparatus or a valve arrangement (figs 8 & 9) that isolate one heat source from the other heat source. The buffer may comprise an expandable gas holder with an upturned container 233 having its edges located in a liquid seal 231. Other embodiments (figs 3 7 & 10 - 12) of the holder are disclosed.
