Abstract

A liquid crystal display device comprises elements F, each actuable individually through a first and a second electrode, e.g. arranged in two concentric circles, e.g. to indicate minutes and hours: the elements in the two circles are divided into matched equal groups I-VI, VII-XII with a common second electrode g1-6, 7-12 for each group, and first electrodes of radially related elements are interconnected; sets of these radial pairs are further connected by conductors e1-10 running circumferentially alternately within the inner circle and outside the outer. Two groups or inner-outer pairs of groups, each group or pair providing independent display of selected elements, are driven with d.c. or a.c. of opposite sign/phase just below threshold, and element sets are driven at voltages chosen to provide above or below threshold p.d. against the group electrodes according to the selected display. The system can be applied to a twin 7-segment digit display. <IMAGE>
