Abstract

The present invention provides a process for producing a two-dimensional material, the process comprising contacting a three-dimensional inorganic layered material with a solvent under conditions such that the three-dimensional material is exfoliated to form a two-dimensional material, wherein the three-dimensional material is a metal-containing material or a clay mineral, and wherein the solvent has a dispersive Hansen solubility parameter (dD) of from about 10 to about 22 MPa1/2. Two-dimensional materials obtainable by said process are also provided.
