Abstract

In the electrolytic production of hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis of molten alkali metal hydroxide, the anode and cathode chambers are separated by means of a separator consisting of beta -Al2O3, which provides effective separation of the anode and cathode chambers and can withstand the hot alkali melt. A Ni anode and Ni or graphite cathode may be used. <IMAGE>
