Abstract

A liquid crystal material for use in a nematic hoist cell includes an asymmetrical azine compound having the general formula: <IMAGE> wherein R1 and R2 are different parasubstituents selected from cyano, halogen, alkyl, and substituted alkyl radicals in which the alkyl radical has from one to nine carbon atoms, and wherein X and Y are selected from hydrogen and methyl radicals. Other compounds, particularly cyano esters may be incorporated with the azine compound in the material.
