Abstract

The upper surface of a non- sacrificial substrate (6), used in a horizontally-moving trough mould (8) for casting a (steel) strip (S), is lined with a metallic foil layer (14), preferably of electrolytic iron or iron alloy and having a thickness of between 10 mu m and 100 mu m; it may be shaped like a trough. it is incorporated into the strip (S) or adheres to it and may be removed by scaling or pickling. There is less substrate erosion, while gas from the pores of refractory substrate (6) is prevented from entering the lower surface of the cast strip (S). The support which moves the mould (6) may be a conveyor belt, of strip or flat chain, with walls (9) or separate walls. Alternatively, wheeled trolleys may move around a continuous track. <IMAGE>
