Abstract

A vehicle collision warning arrangement consists of a source of visible or infra-red light transmitted in a modulated fan-shaped beam 25. A detector 30 adjacent the transmitter receives light reflected from a potential obstacle or from a reflector carried thereby and produces a signal demodulated by a phase sensitive detector to warn of the presence of an obstacle in the beam. To define a range beyond which a warning will not be given, the detector 30 may be spaced from the transmitter with its field of view 32 intersecting the beam 25 to define a region of detection or may be closely adjacent the transmitter (not shown) and have a field of view overlapping the transmitted beam, ranging being achieved either by modifying the reflector to displace the reflected beam in accordance with its range or by comparing the intensity of the reflected beam with a reference beam. <IMAGE>
