Abstract

In order to record and reproduce individual still pictures on and from oblique tracks on a stationary magnetic video tape, without requiring additional non-interlacing generators and without losses in vertical resolution, in addition to the normal rotating video head or heads used for recording/reproducing the interlaced fields (one per track) of moving pictures, on the moving tape, at least one further rotating video head 2 is provided, so that the apparatus includes two video heads 1,2 which we offset axially and circumferentially relative to one another and which, when the tape is stationary, record or reproduce two oblique side-by-side tracks corresponding to the two fields of a complete picture. The azimuth angle of the recording gap 3 of head 2 is different to that of the recording gap 4 of head 1 to avoid cross-talk, and the two still picture tracks are recorded without a guard band therebetween. Figure 1 shows a head arrangement for a 360 DEG tape wrap apparatus, but the invention is also applicable to 180 DEG tape wrap arrangements. <IMAGE>
