Abstract
In a Barkers mill type gas turbine engine e.g. for a helicopter, combustion air is fed to the combustion chambers d on the rotor c by a centrifugal compressor a driven by the rotor c via a layshaft gear k, the rotor being enclosed in a casing g into which the exhaust gas from jet nozzles f is passed to preheat the combustion air. Drive from the rotor, e.g. for propellors, wheels, fans or electric generators, is taken via a second layshaft n. Ignition via spark plugs e is effected from a battery via an ignition switch, booster coils, and slip rings p. The rotor c and compressor a may rotate in opposite directions. An electric starter motor/generator drives the compressor at starting, with the rotor disconnected therefrom by a clutch or solenoid mechanism. <IMAGE>
