Abstract
200,922. British Cellulose & Chemical Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Small, F. T., and Dickie, W. A. April 21, 1922. Cutting-machines. - Apparatus for cutting celluloid or celluloid-like material containing little or no volatile solvents comprises a heated cutting knife with or without auxiliary means for heating the surface, layer of the material. A celluloid block 3 is dovetailed to a carrier 3 held to a reciprocating table 1. A stationary knife 18, is mounted in an electrically insulated carrier 8 adjusted for height by screw gearing 13, 11, 16, 15 and makes metallic contact with a block 22 carrying thick copper cable. A low voltage alternating current is passed through the cable, and the block 22 is heated by the rapidly changing magnetic field set up in it. This method of heating is stated to be 'less likely to cause fires than resistance heading. Heating irons 28, 29 positioned by springs 33 and mounted on bars 32 resiliently held to the tool carrier are also heated by inductance and contact with the surface of the material before and behind the knife. In a modification the knife is reciprocated and the material stationary and according to a further modification the apparatus is adapted for cutting rods.
