Abstract
The invention relates to a printing machine and in particular an inking assembly therefor, the assembly having an ink-containing trough 21 with a pick- up roller 22 associated therewith, and a transfer roller 23 for receiving ink from the pick-up roller. The pick-up roller 22 is mounted for limited movement during use to and from the surface of the transfer roller preferably by mounting a central shaft 22A of the pick-up roller at opposite ends on ramp members 25. The forces arising from peripheral contact between the pick-up roller and the transfer roller tend to move the pick-up roller up the ramp members while the force of gravity tends to restore the pick-up roller to its lowermost position such that peripheral contact between the rollers is periodically broken and re- made during use. Application of the ink to the transfer roller is thus effected in a series of discrete pressing movements to assist in the production of a uniform form of ink on the surface of the transfer roller. Also a scraper member 29 engages with the surface of the transfer roller above the trough such that any excess ink removed from the surface of the transfer roller falls by gravity back into the trough. <IMAGE>
