Abstract

Air drawn in through valve 7 is caused to swirl around the piston crown in which are formed two combustion chambers 4, 5 which are spaced apart longitudinally of the piston 3 and are connected by a passage 6. A fuel injecting nozzle 9 projects through the passage as the piston approaches TDC and injects fuel into the combustion chamber 4 farthest from the piston crown. A sleeve 18 surrounds, and is preferably carried by, the nozzle body. The sleeve 18 is a substantially gas-tight fit within the passage 6 and is axially movable relative to the nozzle body, and is biassed by a spring 21 so that it moves outwardly through passage 6 when a predetermined pressure of combustion gases develops in chamber 4. <IMAGE>
