Abstract

This invention relates to benzylideneaniline derivatives of the general formula: <IMAGE> (wherein: R represents hydrogen or alkyl; R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9 and R10, which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen, alkyl, cyano, nitro, amino, haloalkoxy, haloalkyl, halo, alkoxy, acyl, acyloxy, thio, acylthio, alkylthio, alkyl-sulphinyl, alkylsulphonyl, or hydroxy, with the additional possibilities that either or both of R3 and R8 may also represent cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl and heteroloweralkylidenyl, and that R6, R7, R8, R9 and R10 may each also represent carboxy and alkoxycarbonyl) for use in treating inflammation of the integument of warm-blooded animals by topical administration. Additionally, the benzylideneaniline compounds have been found to be effective sun- screening agents which may help to prevent radiation-induced erythemas. The invention also provides pharmaceutical compositions containing benzylideneaniline compounds, and certain of the new benzylideneaniline compounds per se.
