Abstract

An optical scanner system such as an optically compensated cine projector has a rotary polygonal reflective device 4 with 24 facets each having orthogonal mirrors 10 and 12. The lower part of the device has radial spoke baffles 22 to remove ghost images, and sprockets 20 over which film 18 passes, extending over at least two or three facets and covering the mirror 12 of each. A long narrow arc lamp 28 illuminates film 18 lengthwise through condensers 24 and 26 (condenser 24 covering two or three frames), and a projection lens 6 forms real images of the virtual images of the film frames formed by the scanner. The top and bottom of the real images are subject to defocussing and motion inherent in the scanner design. To compensate for this: (i) a field flattening lens (40, Fig. 10) is included in the projection system, (ii) vignetting is used to deluminate the top and bottom image portions, (iii) the projection system is telecentric, and (iv) rays to the top and bottom image portions are tangential to the locus in space of focussed image point positions. <IMAGE>
