Abstract
An ore sintering process where a mixture of ores is spread on a continuous movable grate as a continuous layer of uniform thickness, the layer is ignited on the surface and combustion is made to progress downwards towards the grate by drawing or forcing air through the layer, the rate of travel of the grate being varied to suit the progress of combustion. Continuous sampling is preformed of the products of combustion in the form of gases which have passed through the bed being sintered, and the ensuing samples are subjected to rapid quantitative analysis especially to ascertain the carbon monoxide and dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen contents. The results of the analyses are processed and compared with values previously determined as optimal and on the basis of this comparison control is exercised on the progress of combustion and sintering of the layer by regulating the rate of travel of the grate.
