Abstract

This invention provides a method of manufacture of paper sized with a ketene dimer and bearing a proteinaceous colloid layer. Sizes which render paper resistant to penetration by water and processing chemicals also tend to repel hydrophilic compositions such as gelatinous photographic silver halide emulsions and thereby, in the case of emulsions, cause emulsion frill. The incorporation of from 0.5 to 4% of gelatin in the ketene dimer sizing composition will reduce emulsion frill but also reduces the resistance of the paper to processing solutions. According to this invention paper is coated with a wet-to-wet composite of a ketene dimer sizing layer and proteinaceous colloid layer thereover, the ketene dimer layer being free of such colloid. The layers may be coated separately wet-on-wet or simultaneously. The invention is useful in the manufacture of photographic materials including photographic papers and image-receiving materials.
