Abstract

A method of heat treatment of materials which release gases and/or vapours during the treatment comprises applying heat (e.g. hot combustion gases) to a charge of the material, directing flows of added (preferably pre-heated) gases and/or vapours from positions above the charge to produce a mixture of the released and added gases and/or vapours at a position above the charge. Preferably the charge of materials is moved successively to subject it to zones (K-M) of underheating and/or topheating, and preferably at least a portion of the charge is subsequently oxidised by causing a flow of oxygen or oxygen containing gases over the charge. The apparatus comprises a furnace (K-N), a treatment path through the furnace, means (14) in the treatment path for supporting a charge of the material and means (17) for directing flows of added gases and/or vapours into the furnace from positions above the charge, the directing means being arranged substantially transversely of the treatment path. <IMAGE>
