Abstract
The present invention relates to antifouling compositions comprising an hydraulic cement such as Portland cement and a biocide which may be a metal compound eg a copper or tin compound, an organic compound or a combined organo-metallic compound. The biocide may be an organo-tin compound of the general formula R3SnX where R is an alkyl, eg butyl or propyl, or aryl eg phenyl group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and X is an anion which may be an oxygen, sulphur, halide, or organic acid anion, the organic acid anion preferably having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms eg acetate. The preferred biocides are the tributyl- or tripropyl derivatives of tin oxide, tin chloride, tin fluoride and tin acetate. These antifouling compositions are especially suitable for use in a marine environment.
