Abstract

Screwing and tapping.-In a screwing or tapping machine the tool-spindle is yieldingly fed bv means of the end thrust provided by helical gears. As applied to a machine for tapping nuts, the spindle 25 is rotated and fed by a helical gearwheel 23 engaging a mating wheel 24 on the spindle, and driven by means of a pinion 21 and toothed sector 19 oscillated through a link having an adjustable throw. The link is connected to a crank-pin on a worm-wheel driven from a continuously rotating belt-pulley. An adjustable brake is provided for retarding the rotation of the spindle and producing the feed when the tap is not cutting, and consists of a U-shaped member 28 loosely mounted on the spindle and gripped between discs 29, of leather or like material, by means of a nut 31 and rings 30 slidably keyed to the spindle, rotation of the member 28 being prevented by a rod 32. The nuts fall by gravity down a hopper 33, and when a nut has been tapped it falls through a slot 45 in an adjustable spring member 36 which is reciprocated by means of a roller, a face cam on the sector, rod 41 and spring 42. The hopper is adjustably mounted on two rods 34 secured to the machine frame at each side of the spindle and parallel therewith.
