Abstract
The invention provides acidic aqueous tin electroplating baths which contain bivalent tin ions and: (a) sulfuric acid and/or fluoboric acid, preferably in an amount of from 20 to 200 grams per litre, (b) from 1 to 20 grams per litre of a dispersing or emulsifying agent selected from non-ionic wetting agents derived from ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, or from cationic and ampholytic wetting agents derived from imidazoline, and (c) from 0.02 to 0.7 grams per litre of a dispersed brightener of the general formula (I> <IMAGE> wherein R1 represents a grouping of the formula (II) or (III> <IMAGE> in which X and Y, which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxy, alkyl or alkoxy group, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, and R3, when R1 represents a grouping of the formula (II), represents <IMAGE> or, when R1 represents a grouping of the formula (III), represents <IMAGE> in which R4 represents an alkyl, phenyl, hydroxyphenyl, alkoxyphenyl, dialkoxyphenyl, alkylphenyl, pyridyl, alkylpyridyl or hydroxypyridyl radical and X'' and Y'', which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyl, sulfoxy, carboxy, amino or amido group, or X'' and Y'' together represent a methylenedioxy group.
