Abstract

A method and apparatus for processing attenuation data to produce a tomographic image requires only that each point within a patient scan circle 20 be viewed from 180 DEG in order to produce a full set of data. Data from views beyond 180 DEG are redundant and do not improve the image quality. Scanning is effected by an X-ray source and detector arrangement in which the X-ray source 16 provides a fan-shaped beam or swath of X-rays and the detectors 12 are arranged about the scan circle 20 for 180 DEG plus approximately the angle 22 of the fan-shaped beam. A back projector 44 back projects data from a polar coordinate system into a rectangular coordinate system in which the matrix points in the rectangular coordinate system can be loaded sequentially with the appropriate density value from a data line expressed in the polar coordinate system. <IMAGE>
