Abstract

Thyristors 3,4 connected in antiparallel are protected from excess applied voltages of either polarity by means having the same breakdown voltage for both polarities. Thus, a bridge 8-12 is connected between the control electrodes 5, 6 with a trigger diode in its direct current path and the arrangement is such that, in the event of an excess applied voltage of either polarity, turn- on current is applied to the control electrode of that thyristor, which is stressed with positive anode voltage, by way of zener breakdown. The circuit is applicable to controlling of the other thyristor current in a welding transformer. A fuse 14 and fault indicator 15 may be included. <IMAGE>
