Abstract

Current collecting systems selectively using compatible materials in different applications for the moving and stationary contact members operate in an inert gas atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide containing a vaporous organic substance (in Chamber 40) to achieve operation at higher temperatures, velocities and current densities than is possible with conventional systems. Low friction and low wear rates are in part achieved by operating the contact members in a low temperature environment, cooling fluid passing through pipes 50 to the brush holder 42. The brushes 44 may be graphitic type with a dispersed metal of preferably Copper or Silver. The organic vapour is preferably at least one of a paraffinic hydrocarbon, an alcohol, a keytone, and aldehide (each having from 7 to 16 carbon atoms) and decalin. Results of experiments with different metals, vapours etc are disclosed. <IMAGE>
