Abstract
Particle detector apparatus for counting the number of ferromagnetic particles passing along an oil- or fuel- flow line 3 of an aircraft engine includes inductance coils 1, 2 wound around the flow line 3, which are supplied with an alternating input signal from an oscillator 4. An output signal from the coils 1, 2, is supplied to a demodulator 6 which is controlled to pass preferentially those signals having a predetermined phase relationship set by phase shift unit 7 with respect to the input signal so as to distinguish between ferromagnetic particles and other discontinuities. Signals from the demodulator 6 are passed to an amplitude detector 9 which in turn passes only those signals over a predetermined amplitude to a counter 10. The amplitude detector 9 may have more than one output, passing signals of different amplitudes to different counters 10, 101, 102 so as to provide a count of particles having different characteristics. The coils 1, 2 may form part of the frequency determining circuit of oscillator 4 or connected in a bridge circuit. A plurality of channels may be tested each being provided with a respective coil. <IMAGE>
