Abstract
This application describes a rotation-only CT scanner with additional source deflection; the deflection and the rotation being so related as to permit the derivation of absorption data in groups focussed on respective "pivot points" outside the detector locus. Data derived from different detectors, but focussed on the same pivot point, relate to groups of paths, some of which overlap, and the overlap is used to compare the performances of different detectors. To reduce data handling, data provided by adjacent detectors can be combined. Additional source deflection is achieved using a scanning X-ray tube whereby the source, viewed from "pivot point" P in the stationary reference frame, moves from F(a) to R(b) then, after flyback, from F(c) to R(d) etc. During these periods, respective detectors Dr, Dr + x receive radiation whose direction intersects point P, and since both detectors receive radiation along similar paths in area 39, the outputs from the two detectors can be compared and averaged. <IMAGE>
