Abstract

A chopper apparatus supplying current from a d.c. source 50 to one or more propulsion traction motors M of a train or vehicle in an environment where control signals such as vehicle speed control signals are present, uses first and second thyristors 56, 58, controlled by control pulses in a manner as to limit electrical noise generation to a minimum, and providing respective different paths between the source and the motors. To cater for various fractional load requirements of the traction motor, the control pulses controlling the rectifiers are positioned in adjacent relationship with each other to limit the generated electric noise; the "ON" conduction period of the first thyristor is arranged to be adjacent and immediately ahead of the "ON" conduction period of the second thyristor. This eliminates the need for expensive special noise filters in associated control apparatus. <IMAGE>
