Abstract
A gas detecting element for detecting fats and odorous substances in fumes comprises a semiconducting oxide, the resistance of which changes in the presence of combustible gases and vapours, and a porous catalytically active layer 6 at least partially covering the semiconducting oxide 4 which oxidises the vapours. The oxide 4 is formed on one surface of thermally conductive electrically insulating substrate 1 on the other surface of which is heater 2, the latter and substrate 1 being encased in ceramic insulating layer 1. The catalytic layer 6 is formed on a porous aluminium oxide layer 5. A positive temperature coefficient resistor may be mounted on the substrate and connected in series with heater conductor 2 or a thermoelectric element may be used for keeping the temperature constant. <IMAGE>
