Abstract

Cellulosic hollow fibers for membrane filtration characterised by a water permeation rate of 2 to 10 l/m2 &cirf& hr &cirf& mmHg and a membrane filtration rate for a gamma -globulin solution of 0.5 to 10 l/m &cirf& hr &cirf& mmHg have active sites (ie points of minimum porosity) situated at the outer and/or inner surface and are prepared by a process comprising (1) spinning through a ring nozzle at a temperature of 25-45 DEG C a solution comprising (a) a cellulose ester, (b) 60-80% of a solvent therefor (based on the combined weight of cellulose ester and solvent), (c) 50-100% of a soluble metal compound (based on the combined weight of cellulose ester and metal compound) as pore former and (d) 80-250% of an auxiliary solvent (based on the weight of the cellulose ester solvent) whilst (2) simultaneously spinning a coagulant for the solution from the centre of the ring nozzle, (3) passing the spun product across a space into a coagulant bath at 0 to 25 DEG C and (4) intracting the pore former.
