Abstract

A stopcock for throttling the flow of liquids or gases comprises a spherical plug 16 having a throughbore and being located between two sealing rings 24, 26, and a throttle element 32 provided with a throttling orifice 34. The sealing rings are positioned so that on rotation of the plug to provide a throttling effect they will not be exposed to the direct action of the throttled liquid or gas as will be the edges which define the effective throttling area. The throttle element forms part of or is located immediately adjacent the spherical plug and thus must be shaped to facilitate movement of the plug therewith or relative thereto. To satisfy this requirement the throttle element has an annular region shaped to correspond to the shape of the spherical plug but the area lying radially within the annular region is relieved. If desired the stopcock may be provided with more than one throttle element. The throttling orifice may be substantially pear- shaped. <IMAGE>
