Abstract

An apparatus for compacting material in a container (22) comprising a ram (16) mounted for reciprocable movement in a charge box (12), and a breaker bar (24) which extends across the charge box with spacing above the ram when the latter is in its extended position, is characterised by a blade which is movable to an operative position in which it substantially closes the space between the breaker bar and the top of the ram during final compaction of the material by the ram. <IMAGE>
