Abstract

A vehicle wheel mounting includes a ball joint 52 which pivotally interconnects an axle 42 and wheel spindle 22. The ball joint includes a socket housing which is connected with the axle and a rotatable ball stud 70 having a tapered shank 68 which extends into a cylindrical opening 60 formed in an arm 32 of the wheel spindle. An axially split bushing 58 has a tapered opening 72 which engages the tapered shank 68 of the ball stud. A cylindrical outer surface of the split bushing is disposed in engagement with the cylindrical opening 60 in the spindle and has a central axis 62 which is offset from the central axis 74 of the tapered opening in the bushing. Upon rotation of the bushing 58 about the central axis 74 of the tapered opening in the bushing, the spindle is moved relative to the axle to adjust wheel camber. This movement of the spindle results from the offset relationship between the central axis of the tapered opening in the bushing and the cylindrical outer side surface of the bushing. When a desired wheel camber has been obtained, a nut 104 is tightened to apply an axial force to the bushing 58. This force causes the tapered shank of the ball stud to expand the split bushing radially outwardly into tight gripping engagement with the cylindrical opening in the spindle arm 22. <IMAGE>
