Abstract

The invention provides an implantable blood access device providing fluid communication with the vascular system of the human body The access device is positioned adjacent a blood vessel 13 such that a flange 5 of the device is positioned so as to enclose a portion of blood vessel wall. After the access device is secured to the blood vessel, and the body within which it is implanted, that portion 23 of the blood vessel which is enclosed by said flange is removed by means of a cutting tool 27. A plugging member is provided for sealing the blood passageway when it is desired to prevent blood flow and the device may include a reciprocable stem which is connected to the plugging means and may be pushed or pulled in order to act as a valve. <IMAGE>
