Abstract

The invention relates to two piston (e.g. tandem) master cylinders for use in vehicle hydraulic braking systems. Whilst pressure is building up in the primary chamber 115 for applying one set of brakes, pressure in the secondary chamber 121 is prevented from increasing by virtue of a control piston 125 trapping hydraulic fluid in a control chamber 139. Valve means including a valve member 143, washer 144 and plunger 146 control pressure in the control chamber so that when a predetermined pressure in the primary chamber is reached the control chamber pressure starts to reduce and eventually becomes equal to the secondary chamber pressure. The master cylinder is for use in a split system having drum brakes connected to the primary chamber and disc brakes connected to the secondary chamber. Delaying the build up of secondary chamber pressure allows the effect of the usual drum brake pull-off springs to be overcome without causing undue wear of the disc brakes. <IMAGE>
