Abstract

A method and apparatus for making castings, particularly ductile iron castings. The castings are made in moulds, each having a chamber 31 in the upper portions of the mould, the chamber being connected by gating passages 30, 26 to the casting cavities. In the manufacture of ductile, or nodular, iron castings, a nodularizing agent is placed in the chamber 31. The chamber is open at the top and the molten metal flows from the chamber into the gating passages of the mould through openings 33 that are disposed above the floor of the chamber. During the pouring operation the upper surface 37 of the mould, including the open top of the chamber, is closed by a refractory sealing member 41 having a passage 82 through which the molten metal can flow. <IMAGE>
