Abstract

199,871. Head, W. April 20, 1922. Soldering.-In soldering the tops and bottoms or the side seams of tins, canisters &c., the tins &c., after being fluxed, are moved along a line or extended film of molten solder emerging from an elongated opening or slot at the bottom or underside or lower portion of a solder bar or bath, so that the joint is free from dross or scum. The bath, Fig. 2, consists of a V- shaped bar 1, 1<a>, closed at its ends and provided with detachable plates 4, 5. The side 1 is provided with a series of perforations 9, Fig. 3, and is channelled at its under side to receive a perforated bar 7 which is moved longitudinalty by a nut 12 and screw 11 so as to regulate the discharge of solder from the bath, which is heated by a gas pipe 38, Fig. 8. The line of solder emerges from the elongated opening A. In a modification a perforated V-shaped bar sliding in guides on the inside of the bath may replace the bar 7, the perforations in the bar and bath being either towards the lower end as in the form shown in Fig 3, or right at the bottom. The tins 26 may be rolled between guides 37 on a vertically adjustable table 29 by a belt 18 mounted on pulleys carried by adjustable arms 22 and driven by a belt 28 from an electric motor or like. The table may carry spring pressed plates 36 to keep the tins in rolling contact with the belt and bath. According to the Provisional Specification the solder may emerge from a series of perforations at the bottom of the bath or bar.
