Abstract

199,399. Fonck, R. P., and Wibault, M. H. M. J. June 19, 1922, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Steering and balancing.-The ailerons of an aeroplane &c. are so connected up to the controls that the outer aileron only is depressed and the inner one is immobilized during a turn. Means also may be provided for permitting opposite . movements of the ailerons, or for depressing both ailerons simultaneously. Fig. 2 shows a camplate b pivoted at a<1> and moved by a lever a. Two levers e<1>, e<2> pivoted at e are connected to the ailerons and have rollers d<1>, d<2> which normally rest in the ends of a circular slot c having its centre at a'. When the plate b is displaced, the roller d<1> or d<2> moves in an eccentric slot c<1> or c<2>, thereby depressing the corresponding aileron, the other roller remaining in the circular slot c. The cam-plate b may be combined with another cam permitting ordinary movements of the ailerons. Fig. 4 shows mechanism for effecting alternatively the unilateral or simultaneous depression of the ailerons. Two overlapping cam-plates b<1>, b<2> each similar to one half of the plate b, Fig. 2, are pivoted about a tube a' which has trunnions to take the sleeves a <2> on the forked end of the lever a. Two sleeves g also are mounted on these trunnions, the sleeves having toothed quadrants g<3> gearing with similar quadrants i<1> on the plates b<1>, b<2>. Lugs g<1> are formed on the sleeves g and shorter lugs a<4> on the sleeves a<2>, both lugs being slotted at a<5> to take transverse bolts h which can be moved by the pilot backwards and forwards parallel to the axis of the tube a<3>. When the bolts h are to the left of the slots a<5> the sleeves a<2>, g are locked together so that a forward movement of the lever a will move both cam-plates b<1>, b<2> and depress both ailerons. The inner ends of the bolts h are guided during this motion by slots f<2> in plates f fixed to the tube a<3>. When the bolts h are to the right of the slots a<5> their inner ends engage slots f<1> in the plates f thereby locking the lugs g<1> to the plate f. Simultaneously a latch, not shown, locks the two plates b<1>, b<2> together. Lateral movement of the lever a then effects unilateral movement, of the ailerons.
