Impact pulverizers.-Relates to coal and other breakers of the type comprising one or more rotary anvil members and one or more hammer members having a different velocity. In the form shown, a slowly rotating horizontal shaft 14 carries a number of notched discs 15 on to which the coal is fed from a shoot 30 at the ascending side, and a parallel shaft 18 rotating at high speed carries hammers 19 which pass between the discs 15 and break the coal thereon. The discs 15 are notched to form anvil members 16 which are grouped in pairs 17, Fig. 2. The hammers 19 may be all in line or arranged in staggered relation around the shaft 18. The striking face of the hammer mav be flat, convex, concave, or sharp-edged, or the hammer may be shaped as a coal pick. The shaft 18 is driven through a breaking-pin clutch and is geared through pinions with the shaft 14. The notches 29 in the discs have straight flaring sides into which the coal &c. is fed from the shoot 30 with tongues 31 entering between the members 16 of each anvil, and with flanges 32 to guide the lumps of coal so that they will span the blades. In a modification, each member 16 co-operates with the members on both sides of it and hammers are located between each two members 16, alternate hammers being offset angularly from each other. In another modification, Fig. 9, the hammers 56 and anvils 57 rotate on the same axis, coal being fed from a shoot 67 so that it falls into a notch just behind the hammer. The hammer, which in this instance rotates four times as fast as the anvil, overtakes the lump of coal in the position shown, and breaks it.
