Abstract
199,084. BillÚ, L. March 9, 1922. Moulding pipes and tubes; strickles.-A pipe is made with an inner layer or layers 2, Fig. 2, of asphalt mixed with sand or asphaltic concrete, to which is applied under pressure a layer of hot stones, gravel or the like 4, and a frame of longitudinal metallic bars 3 connected transversely by looped wires; over the bars may be provided a continuous wire winding 5, and the interstices between the stones, bars and wires are filled with fluid cement over which is applied an outer layer of cement mortar 6. Additional layers of the reinforced cement mortar, with or without interposed layers of asphalt, may be added. The hot stone &c. may be embedded in the asphalt tube by rolling the latter upon a layer of the stonv material, and the cement mortar may be applied to the desired thickness by rolling the tube thus far formed on to a layer of the mortar spread upon a linoleum or rubberized sheet 7. The completed tube is consolidated by a subsequent rolling. Fig. 3, shows a means for gauging the thickness of each layer during the various rolling operations. The core 1 receives at its ends interchangeable gauge rings 9 which roll on the platform 8. In a modified method adapted for constructing the pipe in a trench, longitudinal segments of the tube having the layerconstruction described, are formed in moulds 14, Fig. 5, the thickness of each layer being regulated by curved smoothing tools such as 16, which are slidden along the edges of the mould. For the asphalt layer, the tool may be heated electrically or otherwise. The segments are assembled between two circular frames 19, Fig. 6, mounted on standards 22 in the trench, one of the standards being adapted to be erected in the end of the preceding completed pipe section. The longitudinal joints between the segments are made by fillings of material corresponding with the contiguous material in the segments. The whole is then overlaid with wire 5 and the cement outer layer applied and consolidated by a roller 13. Instead of incorporating sand in the asphalt and cement, pumice powder may be used in the construction of tubes of light weight.
