Abstract

198,840. Hess, E. B., and Royal Typewriter Co., Inc. March 29, 1922. Type-lever actions.-In noise-reducing actions adapted to complete the stroke of the type-levers by momentum, the momentum stroke is rendered uniform for all the type-levers, by attaching the actuating-members of the type-levers at different points from the centre to the sides of the system. As applied to the action described in Specification 182,427, the actuating-links of the middle typelevers are connected to the heels of the type-levers at points vertically beneath the type-lever pivot. whilst the actuating-links of the side type-levers are connected to the heels at points to the rear of the vertical line through the pivot. To avoid return movement of the key-levers during the momentum stroke, the action may include a yielding member; for instance, the actuating-link N, Fig. 2, of the type-lever D may consist of a closely-wound spring n connected to rods n<1>, n<2>, the spring stretching during the momentum stroke. In the action shown in Fig. 3, typelevers D mounted on an oblique segment Bare connected by links N, O to key-levers F, the links O being connected also to levers L. On depressing the key-levers, the links O and levers L come to the dead-centre position when the typelevers reach the position x<1>, and the stroke of the type-levers is completed by momentum, aided by gravity. In the action shown in Fig. 4, the typelevers D are connected by links N to levers N<1> having inclined slots n<1> engaging rollers n<2> on the key-levers F. The levers N<1> at the sides of the system are longer than those at the middle. The links and the type-levers come to the dead-centre position when the key-levers are depressed, and the stroke of the type-levers is completed by momentum. The levers N' prevent the typelevers from rising or rebounding from the rest E. The rest is secured to a plate A' formed with a comb for the key-levers, and a dust-shed a. Keys.-The returning-springs R, Fig. 3, for the levers L are connected to a rocking plate R<1> which can be adjusted by means of an eccentric s to vary the touch. An extension of the plate may form a comb for the key-levers F. Letter-spacing mechanism. - Universal-bar mechanism is operated during the momentum stroke of the type-levers. In one arrangement, the heels of the type-levers are connected to rearwardly-directed links having hooks which engage a universal bar during the momentum stroke of the type-levers. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, a universal bar Q at the front of the machine is carried by levers q connected by links V, Y and a lever V<1> to the dog rocker e<3>, the universal bar being engaged by the links O during the momentum stroke. The escapement mechanism and the link Y are shifted with the platen. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, a universal bar Q is carried by levers q connected by links R<3>, T<4> and a lever R<4> to the dog rocker, the type-levers being connected to links C<2> having hooks C adapted to engage the universal bar during the momentum stroke.
