Abstract

198,126. Spence, W. L. March 18, 1922. Transmission gear of invariable ratio; transmission gear between separate axles.-In double reduction equalized worm and spur gearing, for use with locomotives, such as that shown in Fig. 1 of Specification 193,245, a quill driving shaft passes through the hollow worm-shaft to which it is secured by a flexible coupling. The gearing is shown combined with a friction reversing-gear. The quill shaft J passes through the hollow worm shaft M and is secured thereto by a flexible coupling L, which may carry a. brake-drum L'. The shaft M drives the shaft P, as set out in Specification 193,245, through two combined worm and spur wheels arranged on opposite sides of the worm-shaft. The worm-shaft is hollowed out or formed from butted tubes to allow it to rock on a spherical seating J<1> to bring a friction wheel D secured thereto into engagement with rings B or C on the engine fly-wheel A for reversing the direction of drive. An eccentric F operated by a lever E effects the reversal. When applied to multiple locomotive drives, the quill shaft passes through and is flexibly secured to three or other number of worm shafts, each of which drives a separate axle.
