Abstract

197,847. Marks, E. C. R., (Nissen, N. F.) June 14, 1922. Ashes, removing.- Ash-discharging apparatus for furnaces comprises a water trough disposed below the outlet of a funnel forming the ash-pit, in which trough a shovel or the like suspended from a fulcrum oscillates, the height of the shovel relatively to the depth of water being small to prevent jamming. The ashes may be removed from both sides of a trough suspended from the funnel, or as shown in Fig. 3, from one side only, the shovel 9 being a flap hinged to an oscillating arm and raised by fingers 12, pivoted to side-rails 13, on 'the return stroke. The flap 9 is held raised till the supporting arm is in the position III, when it resumes its normal position. Hinged flaps 15 are fitted to the bottom edges of the funnel 7, and a constant water-level is maintained by connecting the trough 8 by a flexible pipe to a float-controlled tank. The shovel may be arranged to slide along its supporting arms to over-ride obstructions, and brushes may be fitted to its edges to prevent ashes from collecting at the sides of the trough. As shown in Fig. 7, the shovel 24 is resiliently driven, being freely suspended from the shaft 25 and provided with counter-weighted levers pivoted at 28, 29. The shovel is oscillated by the arm 33, which engages the arms 30, 31 of the weighted levers, allowing the shovels 24 to remain stationary if too great a resistance is met. In a modification, the weighted levers are suspended from the arm 33, and carry the shovel 24 along by engaging the stop 32. One side of the funnel may be continued down to the trough, the ashes being discharged from one side of the trough 53 only by wedge-shaped shovels 48, 49, as shown in Fig. 10. The supporting arms of the shovels may be connected by stays 50, 51, and a rotating cylinder 52 with radial arms assists in discharging the ashes. A hinged flap 55, which conforms to the shape of the cylinder 52, provides an air-seal. The discharged ashes may be removed by a travelling conveyor serving a number of furnaces.
