Combinations of instruments; indicating faults. -A device for enabling ignition and like coils and sparking-plugs to be tested and adjusted comprises a box a having contacts f, f<1>, f<2>, coacting with the contacts on a coil inserted therein, clips for making contact with a sparking-plug, a fixed or variable spark-gap d, d<1> in parallel therewith, and an extended base a<1> carrying an ammeter b. The side a<2> of the box a is shown hinged so that when closed and fastened with a coil in the box, the coil is pressed against the contacts f, f<1> by a spring g, the lower contact on the coil resting on the contact f<2>. A battery is connected to terminals c in series with the primary of the coil through the ammeter b, or the battery may be accommodated in the box a or in a space in the base. The sparkgap shown comprises rods d, d<1> contained in a glass or mica tube i recetssed into the front panel a<2> and covered with an ebonite or other plate having an aperture through which the spark may be observed. Instead of a tube, a porcelain plate may be employed under the spark-gap to prevent burning of the box. The tube i may be filled with compressed air to a pressure equal tothat obtained in an internal-combustion cylinder at the moment of firing, so that a coil may be tested under working conditions. Alternatively, the spark-gap may be adjusted by sliding or swinging one of the rods away from the other, stop-pins being provided. In an alternative form of box the front a<2> is fixed and a lever or tumbler switch is provided in the primary circuit; and in a further modification, the side opposite to that carrying the contacts f, f<1> is omitted. Terminals are provided for connecting coils that are too large to be inserted in the box a.
