Abstract
196,437. Smith, A. Feb. 18, 1922. Tumbler bearings.-In lathes &c. having a series of travelling bearers for supporting a leadscrew or other longitudinal shaft at points intermediate its ends, the saddle is provided with means to engage and move the bearers on its advance and to replace them in their original positions on its return movement. The saddle 5<c>, Fig. 5, carries a stud 2 tapered at the end a and provided with a groove c. A bearer 3 for the shaft B and lead-screw A is normally carried by a fixed support 7 and is provided with spring-pressed plungers 5, 5<a>, Fig. 8, which are adapted to engage with the groove c thereby causing the bearer to advance with the saddle. On the return of the saddle a stop-pin 11 in the fixed support coacts with a pin 9 on the bearer and arrests the bearer in its normal position. In a modification, a stud 2, Fig. 9, has two tapered portions so as to carry two bearers 3, 3<a>, Fig. 3. In this embodiment the bearer-supports are arranged at different levels.
