Cooking - stoves; heat - retainers: doors; supports for articles to be heated.-A massive metal plate is provided in a gas cooking-stove, which after being heated in proximity to the burners is moved to another position in which the stored heat is radiated on to the food being cooked. The oven shown contains burners i having downwardy directed jets, above which is a refractory slab e the heat in which may be used to effect or complete the cooking after the gas is extinguished. A massive metal plate a is provided which is supported on ledges d<1> immediately below the burners and after heating is moved to a lower position as shown in Fig. 1, so that food placed' in the stove between it and the burners i is simultaneously heated from above and below. Grooves a<1>, a<2>, in the plate a, Fig. 3, lead the juices from the food to holes a<3> through which they drop to a dish b. A plurality of plates a may be provided. A spit may be removably supported in slots in the side walls of the oven having a pulley j<6> by which it may be rotated manually, or by spring motor. The spit, which is shown separately in Figs 3a, 3b, comprises two rigidly attached bars j<1>, j<3> and a third bar j<2> which is opened out for the insertion of the joint, being retained by thumb-screws j<4>. The slab e may be provided with recesses or holes corresponding to holes in the top-plate f, and burner rings may be provided so that utensils may be heated on the top. The oven is provided with lower and upper horizontally hinged doors g, h, the latter having observation windows h<1> of mica &c. As shown in Fig. 4 a hot-closet k may be provided at the top of the stove, below which a boiler may be fitted at l. A burner tube i<2> may be disposed beneath the bottom plate c of the oven.
