Chucks.-In a chuck of the type described in the parent Specification, one or both of the screw-threads are replaced by helical grooves containing balls. The left- and right-hand threads on the split sleeve d, and shank a respectively, Fig. 4, are replaced by helical grooves containing balls. The shank may be tubular to admit bar stock, for example when used in turret-lathes. In a modification, the right - hand helical groove b, Fig. 1, contains balls and the lefthand thread c is of the usual form, the sleeve d being provided with radially movable jaws e and with a stop d<2> which coacts with a stop e<1> on the shank to limit the opening of the chuck. Screws m in the cap g engage slots in the sleeve to prevent relative rotation, so that when the tool encounters resistance they both rotate relatively to the shank and move axially in opposite directions. The screws may be replaced by a hand-actuated device. In a further modification, the groove is left-handed and the thread right-handed, the direction of the taper on the cap and sleeve is reversed, the thread may be replaeed by a ball-race, the tool abuts against either a solid end on the sleeve or a screwed-plug inserted therein, and the plug or sleeve may be provided with a slot to engage the flat end of the tool.
