195,747. Austin, Sir H., and Hancock, A. J. W. Jan. 5, 1922. Fluid-friction vibration-dampers.- Relates to a device for checking the recoil of vehicle springs in both directions and of the kind comprising a circular oil-filled chamber A with a fixed radial partition F and radial vanes c, c<1> adapted to turn about a central axis C through connection by a lever D and a link to the vehicle spring, the vanes being provided with non-return valves c<2>, c<3> which enable them to move freely away from the partition F and the inner wall of the chamber being cut away at e, e<1> to enable each vane to move freely towards the partition from its normal position at right angles to the partition, while the movement of each vane from a displaced position towards its normal position in the direction of the partition is resisted by the oil in front of it having to pass through a restricted vent in the partition. According to the invention, the vanes in moving back towards the normal position are checked in an increasing degree in a predetermined ratio as they approach the normal by the vent being dispensed with and the inner wall of the chamber being cut away at e<2>, e<3> in such a manner that during the initial part of the return movement oil escapes past the end of the vane through a cut-away part the area of which gradually diminishes so that the resistance to movement increases as the vane approaches the normal position. The cut away parts may be provided in the central boss of the chamber instead of in its wall and they may be formed in the wall or boss as tapered grooves.
