T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN ROWLAND BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county ot Cuyae hoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gauge Cocks, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved gauge cock which will be free of the defects noted in apparatus of this character heretofore constructed, such as cause the sticking of the valve or misalign ment of the valve stem, its guide members,
` and the valve seat, as well as to provide for $0 improved constructions of the several elements of this apparatus. More particularly, my invention provides for the elimination of one of the guide members customarily used to support the valve stem and to provide but a single guide member for the valve stem apart from the valve seat at its inner end. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully de- 'scribed and particularly pointed out in the claims.-
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In the drawing but a single figure is shown, which is a side elevation, partially in .40 section. A body portion 1 is provided, upon one end of which a cap 2 is secured by screw threaded engagement therewith. The cap is provided with an outwardly extending support for a bell crank lever 3 which is pivotally mounted thereon.
Centrally of the body portion is provided a valve chamber 4. At one side along the longitudinal axis of said valve chamber is provided an inlet passageway 5 and at the 5o opposite side a housing 6 for the valve spring. At the lower portion of the valve chambery is provided an outlet passageway 7 of the usual character. The inlet passageway 5 as it extends toward the valve chamber is of constricted diameter 8 and at its -Monel metal.

The inner end of the valve stem may be provided with a valve pin l5 preferably of ahard non-rusting metal, such as hot rolled When such pin is used I forni the saine with an annular depression 16, near its base and then provide the end of the body portion of the valve stem with a recessed portion 17 into which the base 18 of the valve pin is inserted. The metal at the rim 19 of the recess of the body portion is then spun into the annular depression of the valve pin and the parts are thus held in rigid Vpermanent relation. It will be understood that the term valve stem will include the entire structure so formed unless otherwise specied in the claims.
Centrally of its length the valve stein is provided with an annular shoulder 20 preferably by making its inner portion 21 of larger diameter than the outer portion22 as is clearly shown in the drawing.
The housing for the valve spring heretofore referred to is a chamber formed in the body portion along its longitudinal axis and is separated from the valve chamber by a. wall 23, in which is anaperture 24 to permit of the passage of the valve stem. In the usual constructions of this character this aperture forms a guideway for the valve stem with which it has a close sliding it. In my construction I cut away this contact portion or make the aperture larger initially, so that at no timewill the valve stem come into contact with this wall. S0 far as this function is concerned, the wall may be omitted altogether, The said Wall hovv'ever.A serves as a baille to protect the spring.
Surrounding the valve stem Within the valve spring housing is the valve spring 25, at its inner end abutting a Washer 26 seated against the shoulder on the valve stem before mentioned, and at its outer end engaging a Washer 27 beneath which is placed a packing ring 28 Which serves to make a fluid-tight joint with the cap.
The gauge cock is operated in the usual manner, one end of the bell crank lever being pulled down and its opposite end serving to retract the valve stem, thereby lifting the valve pin from its seat and permitting the fluid to pass through the apparatus. Obviously, the fluid may be passed through the apparatus in either direction, depending upon the outside connections, but the usual method of use is the one described.
As will be noted, the valve pin has some freedom of motion in seating because oi' slight play permitted by the aperture 13 in the cap, which insures a perfect contact and tends to keep it free ott obstruction. The recessed or countersunk portion about the valve seat will prevent the valve pin being so displaced as to be entirely out of line with the inlet passageway, but, ordinarily, the valve stem will be held in a central position by the pressure of the spring against its annular shoulder. The valve pin need'not be ground into itting Contact with its seat but is given a line contact by lightly tapping it against the seat.
The apparatus herein described is of simple construction and can be assembled without the use of any specialtools. Itis of unusual Wearing quality because of the use of a hard non-rusting metal valve pin and the eliminating of the plurality of guide members which bring about the misalignment of the parts and the evil results attendant upon such defects. Y
Other modes of applying the principle of my inventionV may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.

A gauge cock comprising in combination a body portion having an enlarged central expansion chamber, and inlet and outlet passageways in communication therewith, one of said passageways being provided With .a valve seat, a cap on said body portion opposite said valve seat, a guide-way provided centrally of said cap, a valve stein mounted in said guide-Way for reciprocating movement thereinsaid stein having a shoulder, a spring interposed between the inner portion of the cap and said shoulder, said valve stein having no point of support intermediate of its ends other than said guide-way, said chamber adjacent said valve seat coinprising a countersunk portion or recess to prevent accidental lateral displacement of the point of said valve stein out of registry with the passageway over which said valve stein is adapted to seat.

A gauge cock comprising in corn'b-ination a body portion having an enlarged central expansion chamber, and inlet and outlet passageways in communication therewith, one of said passageways being provided with a valve seat, a cap on said body portion opposite said valve seat, a guide-way provided centrally of said cap, a valve stein mounted in said guide-way for reciprocating movement therein, an Iannular shoulder provided centrally of said valve stem, a
spring chamber provided in said body poru tion, a baiie flange separating said spring chamber from said expansion chamber and a spring housed within said chamber interposed between the inner portion of the cap and the shoulder on said valve stein, said valve stem having no point of support intermediate of its ends other than said guideway.
7. A gauge cock comprising a valve chamber, a valve inlet passageway of oonstricted diameter, a valve seat therein, a valve stern having reciprocating and lateral motion within said chamber, a valve pin rigidly supported upon said valve stem and adapted to be placed in fluid-tight engagement with said seat, said chamber adjacent said valve seat comprising a counters-link portion or recess to prevent accidental lateral displacement of the point of said valve stem out of registry with the passageway over which said valve stein is adapted to seat.
