Abstract
195,731. Stukenborg, F. W. Jan. 3, 1922. Cotton, gathering.- Rapidly-rotating brushes for removing cotton from the boll are driven at such a speed that the picked cotton is thrown off by centrifugal force into a current of air which conveys it from the neighbourhood of the brushes. A pair of picking-brushes 15 is enclosed in a head 10 formed of two like parts 11 secured together by bolts 12 passing through lugs 13. The front of the head is open, forming a mouth 14 that is brought up to the bolls. The brush cores carry bristles 17, preferably hog-bristles, and are mounted on shafts 20 driven by worm-gear from an electric or other motor 26; they may be enclosed by, sleeves 18 that overlap the bearings 19 for the shafts. Guards 37 of wire may be arranged in sets in front of the brushes. The head is formed with an unobstructed chamber 28 at the rear of the brushes so that the picked cotton with its seeds may be thrown from the brushes by centrifugal force into a space where it can be acted upon by a current of air induced by a fan and so conveyed through a tube 29 to a receiving chamber. Apertures 34 are provided in the head to permit the inflow of air. In a modification, one brush only is provided, the cotton being drawn into the head between the brush and a coacting lip. The brushes are preferably 2¢"-3" diameter and are driven at a speed of 1800-2500 revolutions per minute. Specification 115,230 is referred to.
