Abstract

Exciting; rotary transformers.-An alternating current generator is excited by alternating current the frequency of which is equal to a quarter of the product of the number of poles and the number of revolutions, whereby the frequency of the generated current is equal to that of the exciting current so that the machine may be self-excited. An auxiliary exciter N is provided for the starting period. The exciter N is excited with continuous current, and where it is mounted on the generator shaft it is constructed with half the number of poles of the generator M. When the frequencies of the currents generated by the generator M and exciter N are equal, the exciter is disconnected, and the stator and rotor of the generator M connected to the bus-bars A, B, C. The separate exciter N may be replaced by auxiliary windings on the stator and rotor of the generator M. The machine N may be driven from the generator M through toothed gearing. in which case the machine. N mav not have half the number of poles of the generator M.
